| | Diarrhea refers to the passing of more than 8-10 watery stools in any one 24-hour period. What to do:
Infant:
• If breastfeeding, continue breastfeeding.
• If formula feeding, Pedialyte or Ricelyte should be given for 6 hours. This is followed by a soy formula (e.g., Isomil DF or Prosobee) mixed half as strong as the usual preparation for 24 hours, then Isomil DF or Prosobee for 1-2 weeks.
Older Children:
• Offer clear liquids such as Gatorade followed by a modified B.R.A.T. diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast or crackers, pastas, or lean protein such as chicken) for 24 hours. Resume a regular diet, but limit milk or milk products (except yogurt which is a recommended food for diarrhea) for 1-2 weeks.
Call us immediately if:
• There is a large amount of blood mixed with the stool.
• If there is vomiting with signs of dehydration (no urination in 8 hours or a dry sticky mouth or tongue).
• The child appears especially ill.
Call us promptly during regular office hours if:
• The diarrhea has lasted longer than 3 days with more than 8 stools per day.
• The fever is 101° or greater for more than three days.
• There are streaks of blood in the stool.
